It’s depressing to think about The Walking Dead ever ending — the summer break is bad enough — but all good things must come to an end, preferably before they turn into bad things. The Powers That Be have talked about knowing where TWD Seasons 10, 11 and 12 are headed, with the potential for the show to continue for another 10 years. But Robert Kirkman said he wants the TV show to end before his comic book series, which is up to Issue 139 and has around 300 issues already planned.
So when will it end? Forbes just shared an interesting argument for when they should end the show.Forbes mentioned how "prestige" cable shows (Sopranos, Breaking Bad) tend to end after five, six or seven seasons, but Walking Dead could break another boundary and continue on as an “eternal” show with constant updates, whether it should or not. Here’s more of their story:
“The Game of Thrones team has repeatedly expressed their desire to end the show before people are begging them to stop. I have to imagine some people involved with The Walking Dead feel the same way, though I bet AMC would love 15-20 seasons, given how reliant the channel has been on the zombie-fest, ordering beefed up seasons and now even crafting a spin-off show to ensure they retain an audience during the original show’s off-season.
Right now, at issue 127, The Walking Dead has a hard cut between a long-running plotline and then a completely new chapter that features a fairly significant time jump. That’s 50 or so issues away from where the show is now, so perhaps TWD could squeeze out two more seasons and end after season seven before this entire new plotline starts. The comic could continue on, and the show could rest in peace, having fulfilled an important arc.”
Forbes continue on to say they can’t really imagine TWD ending after just two more seasons, so they figure it’ll run until at least Season 9 or 10 before there are serious talks about wrapping up the series.
But that reference point for Issue 127 is the end of the “All Out War” storyline. That’s Rick’s war with Negan and The Saviors, which ends with Rick deciding not to kill Negan, but to keep him in jail, as a way to show they are better than Negan and can prove him wrong by re-building a thriving community without him. It might be a good ending for Rick’s story … but would they really end it there? In the comic book, there is a two-year time jump forward from Issue 126 ending “All Out War” to Issue 127 launching the volume “A New Beginning,” with a bunch of new characters and the start of The Whisperers storyline shortly after that. Would the TV show skip that, or just add it in sooner?
What do you think of the idea of ending the TV show after “All Out War” is resolved — and would that even be in Season 7 or more like Season 8 or 9? Negan may not even show up until late Season 6/early Season 7.
